If we read about a pleasant feeling, „not simply sensuous“, but rather a feeling of “selfmaintaining” animatedness, Immanuel Kant describes the feeling inherent to the process of fascinated inspection and selfsustaining reflection in the encounter with beauty and coherent art. This feeling reflects „the apprehension of this form insofar as it shows itself in the mind to be suitable“ to our cognitive powers, (Kant 1790/ 2001,§ 30) and sets them into a harmonious free „play that is selfmaintaining and even strengthens the powers to that end“ (Kant1790/ 2001,§ 49).

If we hear about „not simple sensory pleasure, but, rather invigorated feelings that are difficult to describe“, the pioneer of neuroscientific emotion theory Jaak Panksepp reports DA related¹ experience associated with being eagerly involved in fluent exploratory activity (Panksepp 1998,p. 149). And Panksepp offers rich neurobiological evidence to elucidate the neurobiological correlate of this process.

Die Zusammenführung beider Ansätze verspricht einen Zugang zu den organismischen Grundlagen der autopoietischen² Dynamik des Kantischen Schönheitsurteils.

Dieser Ansatz steht im Kontrast zur statistisch-normativen ansetzenden Erforschung des Kunstschönen, die das Undenkbare und damit die Dynamik der Kunstarbeit verfehlt und das Zustandekommen der Euphorie faszinierter Inspektion und unausschöpflicher Reflektion in der Begegnung mit dem Schönen nicht erklären kann.
